You decide who reaches a model through AI.

Power BI has a new semantic model setting for AI access. Here are three facts to know about it before an AI pilot.

Keys, open locks, security, unlock, secure

Power BI has a new semantic model setting: "Allow any person with only read permissions to use AI (for example, Copilot, Microsoft's MCP tools) on this model and its related reports".

It applies to Power BI Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat and Cowork, data agents and remote Microsoft MCP tools.

Three facts to know:

  • It is on by default.
  • People with write permission control it.
  • It is not inherited. A model built on another model needs its own setting.

Review it on every model before an AI pilot.
